Our Exhibitor - Wa 2020

Our Exhibitor: Sandy Marker
Melbourne Ikebana Festival is delighted to welcome Ms Sandy Marker, a Sogetsu Sanyo teacher from NSW. Ms Marker is the fifth recipient of the Norman and Mary Sparnon scholarship and the NSW Director of The Australian Sogetsu Teacher's Association NSW Inc for two and a half years. She also has interests in ceramic and jewellery design which in 2008 she was awarded 1st place Graduate Metal XI International in Adelaide.

Our Exhibitor: Shoso Shimbo




Shoso Shimbo PhD is an artist with over 30 years experience in Ikebana. He was selected as one of “Australia’s top floral designers” (Belle) and has won multiple awards including the Gold Award at the Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show. He is the Arnold Bloch Leiber Prize winner at the Yering Station Sculpture 2017. His recent commissions include a public work of art for the Archibald Award Exhibition 2015 and the Wye River Project 2016.

Shoso is a directer of International Society of Ikebana Studies, Ikebana Gallery Award and he teaches Japanese Aesthetics at RMIT Short Courses. He is the Secretary-General of Wa: Melbourne Ikebana Festival 2019. He presents Ikebana performance with the Grigoryan Brothers at Melbourne Recital Centre as part of Wa: Melbourne Ikebana Festival 2019.

Shoso has an MA in Japanese Studies, a Master of Fine Art and PhD in Education.

Our Exhibitor: Shoan Lo



Shoan is an ikebana artist and certified Sogetsu ikebana teacher who is currently working towards the Teacher's Diploma Second grade. She conducts regular workshops and weekly classes teaching Sogetsu Ikebana style.

With a background in architecture, she has ikebana training under the guidance of Dr Shoso Shimbo since 2005. Being conscious about promoting ikebana, she assisted Dr Shoso Shimbo in founding the "Ikebana Gallery" and continue to be the Associate Director of its Ikebana Award Committee. 

In the last ten years she has partaken in many public exhibitions and competitions, which includes the annual Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show. Her large-sized weekly display can been seen at the North Balwyn Baptist Church.

Our Exhibitor: Shokai Ikebana




Pulcheria (Shokai) started teaching as a sogetsu ikebana artist in 2019.  Her ‘Early Summer’ arrangement received a Gold Award from the Ikebana Gallery in 2018.  Shokai is on Instagram and Facebook @shokai.ikebana .

Our Exhibitor: Soyo Kagawa



Melbourne Ikebana Festival is delighted to welcome Ms Soyo Kagawa, Professor in Ichiyo School of Ikebana as a special exhibitor from Tokyo. Ms Kagawa will also join our Ikebana Demonstration as a demonstrator.   


Soyo Kagawa 加川聡葉

Soyo is from Tokyo and has a licensed to teach Ikebana in Ichiyo School.
She became a disciple of the Ichiyo School, and she studied under headmaster - IEMOTO.
Her experience of Ikebana is over 20 years.

Our Exhibitor: Aileen Duke







Aileen Duke (Shoto) is a Sogetsu Ikebana artist and teacher, with a background in art education, information technologies and business governance.

In 2018, she won the international online Ikebana Gallery Award in both Overall and People's Choice categories. In 2016, her essay 'Ikebana: Respecting the Past, Expressing the Future' was published in the International Journal of Ikebana Studies. She has exhibited at the Wa exhibition several times. She is a secretary of the Sogetsu School of Ikebana, Victoria Branch.

"The creative, meditative and mindful aspects of Japanese flower arrangement provide a fantastic counter-balance to our busy lives," says Shoto, "Ikebana brings beauty into our homes, hearts and minds and enhances our appreciation of nature.

Shoto teaches Ikebana on the Mornington Peninsula, in Victoria, accepting casual and certificate students. Under her business name, Eclipse Ikebana, she makes arrangements for a number of local businesses, and runs workshops at a range of venues. During 2019, she has teamed up with SeaCrest yoga to present Yoga and Ikebana workshops in Red Hill.

Akemi Suzuki is a Japanese ikebana artist and teacher. Her work has been exhibited extensively in both Australia and Japan. She has been a practitioner of sogetsu ikebana for over 14 years. She uses a variety of techniques to bring the essence of ikebana to each piece of work. 

She has exhibited extensively including the fifth Facebook Everyone’s Sogetsu Ikebana Exhibition (she got silver moon award) and has exhibited five times in the Melbourne International Flower and garden show. She will also exhibit in the Wa: Melbourne Ikebana Festival in August of this year.
